What is KangHai D208?

KangHai (D208) is a heritage variety from Jementah, Segamat, Johor, formally registered with the Department of Agriculture only in 2019 — late on paper, but grown locally for generations. It is also spelled Gang Hai and written 江海 in Chinese.

Its newcomer status on the official register belies a long local history in the Segamat district.

Flavour & Texture

KangHai’s defining trait is its dry, fibrous, chewy texture — so distinctive that some locals nickname it "durian popcorn". This is the opposite of the soft, creamy custard of Musang King.

The flavour is genuinely contested: some taste a bitter-pungent intensity, others a milder clean sweetness. It depends on ripeness, tree, and the eater’s palate — KangHai is a variety people either seek out or pass over.

Who It’s For

KangHai is for the curious — durian eaters who have tried the creamy classics and want something with a completely different mouthfeel. The chewy, dry texture and divisive flavour make it a talking point rather than a crowd-pleaser.

It is also among our more affordable varieties, making it a low-risk way to explore a texture you won’t find elsewhere on the stall.

At the Stall

We sell KangHai by whole fruit weight, opened in front of you. Naturally dropped from our own trees in Bukit Serampang, Tangkak — same-day harvest, no cold storage.

Honest note: KangHai’s flavour genuinely divides people. If you prefer soft, sweet, creamy durian, this may not be for you — and we’ll tell you so. Ask to smell before you buy.

Because of its unusually dry, chewy, fibrous texture, so different from the soft custard of varieties like Musang King that some locals gave it the nickname.

It depends. If you want soft, sweet, creamy durian, KangHai’s dry chewy texture and divisive flavour may not suit you. It is better suited to the curious who want something different.
