What is Black Thorn D200?

Black Thorn (D200) is one of Malaysia’s most sought-after prestige durians, registered with the Department of Agriculture in 2013. It originates from Balik Pulau, Penang, the same region that produced Red Prawn. Both its English name and the Chinese name 黑刺 (Hēi Cì) mean "black thorn" — referring to the dark, almost blackened tips on the fruit’s thorns.

Chinese-speaking buyers also know it as Ochee (乌鸡), literally "black chicken", a Hokkien nickname tied to the deep orange flesh colour.

Flavour Profile

Black Thorn has reddish-orange flesh with a distinctive butterscotch and light alcohol character unlike any other common variety. The sweetness is layered and complex, with very mild bitterness — sweeter and cleaner than Musang King, fading before you expect it to.

Texture is smooth and creamy with low fibre. Brix reference 35–42%, varying by tree and season.

Why Black Thorn is Genuinely Rare

D200 trees are slower to mature and produce lower yields than Musang King. The fruit bruises easily and must be caught in nets rather than allowed to drop freely — most farms cannot manage the additional labour consistently.

Because it commands a premium, some sellers label similar-looking fruit as D200. The reddish-orange flesh and butterscotch-alcohol note are the most reliable indicators.

At the Stall

We carry Black Thorn when our Bukit Serampang orchard produces it — never sourced from wholesalers. Supply may be zero on some days, so WhatsApp before travelling if Black Thorn is specifically what you want.

Sold by whole fruit weight, opened in front of you. Same-day harvest, no cold storage.

Honest note: If a stall has abundant Black Thorn every single day, question the sourcing. Genuine D200 supply is seasonal and inconsistent by nature.

They are different. Black Thorn is sweeter and more alcoholic in character; Musang King is more bitter and custard-like. Neither is objectively superior — it depends on your palate.
