D175 Red Prawn durian — coral-orange flesh, Penang origin

What is Red Prawn D175?

Red Prawn (D175) is a Penang heritage variety from Pondok Upeh, Balik Pulau, registered with the Department of Agriculture as D175. The name comes from the salmon-to-crimson colour of its flesh, reminiscent of cooked prawn.

In Hokkien it is called Ang Heh (红虾); in Malay, Udang Merah — both meaning "red prawn".

Flavour Profile

Red Prawn is the most elegant durian on our stall. The coral-orange flesh is butter-soft, with a sweetness that opens slowly and lingers long, finishing with a distinctive wine-like note that sets it apart.

Where Musang King is about intensity, Red Prawn is about layered complexity — creamy rather than thick, the bitterness gentle, the aroma floral. Brix reference 35–38%.

Why People Love It

Its crimson-tinged colour and refined profile make Red Prawn a favourite among durian lovers who have moved past the obvious choices. The gentle sweetness makes it approachable for first-timers, yet the wine-like finish keeps experienced eaters coming back.

Fully ripe Red Prawn develops a slight alcoholic note — a sign of complete on-tree maturation, not spoilage.
